Kitzbuhel ski resort is part of Tyrol region. This mega resort considered one of the
most perfect places to ski in Austria.
Just like many other mega resorts, Kitzbuhel interlinked with the resorts nearby: Kirchberg to the west and extends south through Jochberg into the Salzburg state at Hollersbach im Pinzgau.
Kitzbuhel is famous in the winter-sports world for being the place for the Hahnenkamm races, from the first appearance in 1931 and by now on the annual Alpine World Cup competitions circuit.
In this video
We will show you the most important things you need to know before booking a vacation in Kitzbuhel and if you will stay until the end of the video, you will get some great tips that will help you to take better decisions and have a more enjoyable vacation.
How to get to Kitzbuhel?
The closest airports to Kitzbuhel are Salzburg and Innsbruck Airports with transfer time of 1 hour and 15 minutes and Munich Airport with transfer time of 2 hours.
If you are coming by train, Kitzbuhel has its own train station, and postbus picks up passengers from there every 15 minutes.
From Munich airport you can take a train directly form the terminal
Kitzbuhel has an amazingly long ski season beginning in mid-October and last to early May.
As for the slopes, Kitzbuhel local area divided by two sides. the Kitzbuheler Horn to the north-east,
(pause- area ski sequence) and the main Hahnenkamm-Pengelstein-Resterhohe linked ski area to the south-west.
With most of the terrain below tree line the resort has invested heavily in snow cannons
The ski area of Kitzbuhel, spans from 800 meters above sea level to 2000 meter above sea level.
The ski area of Kitzbuhel has 192 kilometers of ski runs. Served by 58 state of the art lifts only the Austrian makes.
Overall there are 17 black runs, 32 red runs, and 45 blue runs, in the ski area of Kitzbuhel.
add to that 42 km of ski routes.
pay note that the Kitzbuheler Horn ski area is not connected, to the main ski area
Experst can enjoy the 20 km of groomed black runs including the Streif downhill racing course infamous as the most dangerous downhill slopes in the world cup cuircuit,
Kitzbuhel has an ocean of off piste to explore when the snow condition allows it. the best snow can be reached in the highest point above Pass Thurn, and there is also the wonderful Giggling run, aka route 33 which start at Steinbergkogel area and end near Hechenmoos bus station, at the village of Aurach.
Freestylers are up for a treat, Snowpark Kitzbuhel contains area for all levels from beginners to pro. There is also park at Kitzbuheler Horn. No half pipe and now airbag though, in both.
When you are asking yourself where to stay? If you want to be in the center of attention the town of Kitzbuhel is the place to stay with a vibrant atmosphere and great variety of accommodation.
To the west is Kirchberg in Tirol and to the south Jochberg, both relatively quieter towns with a good access to Kitzbuhel ski area, and cheaper prices.
You can travel from Kirchberg or Jochberg to Kitzbuhel via Ski bus all day, the bus leave in intervals of 15 minutes at rush hours. from Kirchberg, first skibus arrive to Hahnenkamm Bahn

Kitzbuhel center of town is a charming medieval quarter decorated with delicate painted frescoes, rightly deserves its reputation as the most beautiful ski town in Austria. The center is big magical pedestrian area sorounded with restaurants and luxurious boutiques and designer clothes.
When the sun goes down, the old mining town awakes and the apres ski bars and pubs overflow the town with a cheerful atmosphere lasting deep into the night.
Regarding apres ski,
we recommend you pop over The Mocking stube on your skiing back to village.
It is located at end of slopes of the Hahnenkamm and it is great place to relax with a beer before heading to town.
The Londoner or spoho apres ski which have quite wild parties, on the other side of the street,
or O’Flannigans Irish pub if you look for a sport bar.
Kitzbuhel offer many other attractions from tobogganing, ice skating, cross country ski and many other winter attractions, like nightskiing in gaisberg lift in kirchberg

and our total score for Kitzbuhel is, 8.5
Our tip for kitzbuhel,

Somewhere in the valley of Oetz - the most spectacular valley in Austria and close to the Italian border, lies the jewel of this long valley, the famous ski resort of Soelden.
Soelden has well-equipped and advanced mountain lift infrastructures, three peaks higher than 3000m, aka the Big 3, with spectacular viewing platforms. It’s famous for its lively après ski scene and its main street, the famous Soelden party mile, and was featured in the 2015 James Bond film: Spectre.
Soelden is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Alps, and is particularly favoured by Dutch and German skiers.
As the jewel in the crown of the Oetztal, Soelden gets the benefits from new developments in the area.
In this video, we will present these developments and show you the most important things you need to know before booking a holiday in Soelden. If you stay until the end of the video, you will get some great tips that will help you to make better decisions, save time and money and have a more enjoyable holiday.
The closest airport to the ski resort is Innsbruck, in Austria, at just 83 km away - or 1 hour and 10 minutes’ drive. Other close airports are Friedrichshafen at 211km away - or two hours and 46 minutes, Memmingen at 177km away - or 2 hours and 40 minutes - and St Gallen at 182km away - or 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Two major airports near Soelden are Munich and Zurich, but both are just over a 3 hours’ drive away.
Soelden’s ski area is comprised of 144km of slopes for skiing and snowboarding with altitude ranging from 1,350 to 3,250 m.
As mentioned earlier, Soelden has one of the most advanced and well-equipped lift infrastructures in the world, comprised of 31 lifts that can carry an incredible 66,020 passengers per hour.
Unlike times gone by, if you buy a ski pass for more than three days, then you’ll get the Oetztal super ski pass, which includes 361 km of slopes and 91 lifts, among them the resorts of Obergurgl and Kuthai. 6 days ski pass will cost you between €277 to €288 most seasons, or as low as €243.50 in early Dec and late April. The lift company ESTABLISHED a dynamic pricing system. These prices are only valid online at least five days before the first day of skiing.
The prices at the ski desk can be up to 20% higher than those prices mentioned. There’s also a free cancellation policy if you cancel up to five days before the validation point. If you buy a pass for six days or longer, you receive free admission to 007 elements in Gaislachkogl peak, and other attractions like free use of the toboggan runs and one-night skiing!
The ski season in Soelden is from late November until early May, but if you want to have an early warm-up for the season ahead, the glaciers ski area in Soelden is open for skiing from late September.
Out of the 144 km contiguous ski runs at the ski area of Soelden, 49% are blue, 32% are red, and 19% are black.
We can divide the ski area to 3 different sub-areas:
If you are a beginner or plan to take skiing lessons, the Giggijoch lift top station is the meeting point of most ski schools. The runs on the Giggijoch vary from blue to black but are mainly comfortable, wide, well-groomed slopes. Here you can find the “area 47” snow park which was shaped by designers from 8 countries. The Giggijoch area is also known as the Soelden-Hochsoelden area and it connects between the two other areas.
If you are a freerider, and looking for off-pistes, the Gaislachkogl, the 2nd area, and one of the big 3 peaks, offers many great freeride routes, most of them quite challenging. Here you can find various slopes for all levels and also the toboggan and night skiing runs.
The 3rd area is the glaciers area, which is comprised of 2 glaciers around the Schwarze Schneide peak, the highest of the famous “big 3”. The glacier on the north side is Rettenbach, where you can find the World Cup run in black.
The glacier to the south is Tiefenbach, where you can find a range of beginners runs. Tiefenbahkogl, the top of this glacier, is the 3rd of the big 3 peaks, with an amazing suspended long balcony over the abyss. The glacier area is excellent for beginners, who can explore a circle of blue runs. This is the area that is open for skiing each year from late September.
The BIG 3 phrase was coined by Soelden’s marketing team, to emphasise the fact that it is the only ski resort in Austria with three peaks above 3000 meters.
By the way, there are only 7 ski lifts that cross the 3km altitude.
Another feature unique to Soelden is the largest vertical drop in Austria, at almost 2 km, from a top altitude of 3250m to 1340m at Giggijoch bottom station level.
Soelden’s longest ski run is the longest in Austria.
thanks to FATMAP.COM for the use of their 3d maps.
thanks to the Oeztal tourist office for the use of the helicopter shots, aqua dome shots , and Obergurgl ski shots.

It's one thing to look down at Independence Monument from Rim Rock Drive. It's something totally different when you're at its base looking up. For the 3rd year in a row I hiked to the base of Independence Monument. The first year was up and back the Lower Monument Canyon trail. Last year I did the loop, first up Wedding Canyon to the monument, then back down Lower Monument Canyon.
This year, with Nancy in tow, we hiked up and back the Lower Monument Canyon trail. Why? It's an easier hike to the base of Independence Monument. The Lower Monument Canyon trail is a developed trail, unlike Wedding Canyon. There's a clearly defined trail with steps and clear trail markings. Although there is still a lot of elevation gain it's not nearly as strenuous as Wedding Canyon with it's skree and rock scrambling.
This was Nancy's longest hike to date. I was surprised she actually completed the hike. But, she did suffer with her back as a result. You can see in one of the videos, towards the end of the hike, her bent over in pain. I think it was the constant downhill going back and the pressure it puts on you legs and back that hurt her so much. I know it took a toll on my new knee. Our total distance hiked was 5.67 miles. That's a lot for someone who is not accustomed to long distance hiking.
My knee, on the other hand, held-up wonderfully. It was sore after the hike and the next day, but during the hike it felt strong. As a matter of fact it felt so strong that I braved the skree at the base of Independence Monument and actually touched the rock face of the monument, some 75 or so feet up.
What got both of us was how hot it got toward the end of the hike. I know I was more than ready to get someplace cool and rest a little. I think we both took something for pain when we got back to the SUV. Would I do it again? Yes! One year I was to hike from the top of Upper Monument Canyon to Independence Monument on to Lower Monument Canyon to the trailhead, a distance of around 6 miles.
At the end of the hike I pondered a thought question: How old was Adam the day after God created him? If God could create Adam to be a certain age could He not also created rock to be a certain age?
As always, for any hike, be prepared. Have the right equipment and supplies. Always check the weather and be prepared. Always pack out what you pack in and PLEASE realize that God's creation does not need your help so do not move or mark on rocks.
