The video claims saltwater crocodiles in the Barito River in Borneo are learning to โ€œpretend to drownโ€ in order to lure bystanders into the water.

But Aussie crocodile experts are not convinced, saying the theory is baseless.

Expert Brandon Sideleau told Yahoo News Australia heโ€™s seen โ€œabnormalโ€ behaviour before, but feels there is a more likely explanation behind the crocodileโ€™s manoeuvre.

He said, โ€œI think itโ€™s probably got some prey items in its mouth because Iโ€™ve seen it on some of the rivers here where saltwater crocodiles will kind of spin around underwater, youโ€™ll see their hands up in the air when theyโ€™ve got food in their jawsโ€ฆ That would be my guess.โ€

He added, โ€œCrocodiles are also much more intelligent than they are often given credit forโ€ฆ but they certainly would not be mimicking a person drowning to attract prey. It definitely wouldnโ€™t be trying to lure people in because thereโ€™d be no way for it to actually learn that.โ€

Leading zoologist and crocodile researcher Professor Graham Webb agreed the story had โ€œno factual basisโ€ and suggested the crocodile may have had its tail caught and was โ€œbeing prevented from swimming normallyโ€.
