Are saltwater crocodiles really โluringโ humans into the water? | Yahoo Australia

The video claims saltwater crocodiles in the Barito River in Borneo are learning to โpretend to drownโ in order to lure bystanders into the water.
But Aussie crocodile experts are not convinced, saying the theory is baseless.
Expert Brandon Sideleau told Yahoo News Australia heโs seen โabnormalโ behaviour before, but feels there is a more likely explanation behind the crocodileโs manoeuvre.
He said, โI think itโs probably got some prey items in its mouth because Iโve seen it on some of the rivers here where saltwater crocodiles will kind of spin around underwater, youโll see their hands up in the air when theyโve got food in their jawsโฆ That would be my guess.โ
He added, โCrocodiles are also much more intelligent than they are often given credit forโฆ but they certainly would not be mimicking a person drowning to attract prey. It definitely wouldnโt be trying to lure people in because thereโd be no way for it to actually learn that.โ
Leading zoologist and crocodile researcher Professor Graham Webb agreed the story had โno factual basisโ and suggested the crocodile may have had its tail caught and was โbeing prevented from swimming normallyโ.
