In May of 2024, Koei Tecmo announced Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a game billed as a return to the roots outing for the long-running series, and each time we have seen more of it, as we get closer and closer to its looming release, each time, it has looked like an increasingly exciting prospect- especially for Dynasty Warriors fans who are longing for a return to the series' golden days.

Eschewing its predecessor's open world structure, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is instead going to adopt a world map structure, with players being allowed to travel to and mess about in maps of varying sizes, both big and large, both linear and more open ended.

The new Dynasty Warriors Origins is a brand new action rpg hack and slash hybrid, that takes combat more similar to action games like Bayonetta, DMC or Sengoku Basara and brings it into a more strategic, more engaging and more interesting moment to moment game, and in my opinion, a new height for the series.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins serves as a reboot of the popular musou series, led by a sole amnesiac protagonist. The protagonist isn’t the only narrative device used to wean newcomers into the setting and series; the game takes place at the very beginning, at the inception of the Yellow Turban Rebellion.

This game takes a zoomed-in approach, going in-depth on the origins of the three kingdoms rather than a zoomed-out historical sandbox. Origins also takes a more humorous approach regarding the popular Three Kingdoms characters. Fully voice-acted cutscenes and bond events help characterize series-staple officers like Cao Cao and Dong Zhuo.

Despite these positive points, an inconsistent checkpoint system and the rather irritating instances of running around saving officers keeps Origins from being its best. Still, this is a great direction for the floundering series, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

If Dynasty Warriors: Origins is meant to be a new beginning, it’s off to a masterful start. It doesn’t just have the largest amount of enemies the series has thrown on screen at once, it also deepens its combat, improves its storytelling without getting in the way of the action, and provides a healthy amount of replayability and postgame content – all while looking better than ever. Your amnesiac hero is a bit too much of a blank slate at times, but the impressive ensemble cast make this story sing. Origins is both a great entry point for newcomers and a triumphant return for veterans who felt the last few entries had become stale or missed the mark.
