Jump starting a car with a dead battery is easy… but it has to be done right. Batteries Plus can show you how to jump start your car in 5 easy steps.

How to jump start your car in five simple steps.

ONE. Park and Prep
First, park the cars close to one another. Make sure both vehicles are off. Pop the hood on each and locate the batteries.

TWO. Attach Cables
Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Then attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery.
Next, connect the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery and the remaining clamp to the negative post — or attach to any unpainted metal surface of the dead car.

THREE. Start Your Engines
Start the working car first, then the dead car.
Note: it might take a few tries for the dead car’s engine to start — and you may need to leave the cables connected for a few minutes as the voltage recovers.

FOUR. Remove Cables
Remove the cables in the reverse order of how you attached them. Black from the negative post or metal surface, then black from the negative terminal of the working battery. Red from the working battery, then red from the revived battery.

FIVE. Let it Run
Let the revived car run for several minutes or drive for at least 15 minutes — this gives the battery time to recharge.

Need jumper cables or… a new battery? Stop by Batteries Plus — and consider investing in a jump pack in case you need a jump and another driver isn’t available.

HOW TO JUMPSTART A CAR
Disclaimer: Follow your car owner's manual and the jumper cable manual for full instructions specific for your car. If either vehicle has an electronic ignition system or is an alternatively fueled vehicle, the use of jumper cables may damage it.

To jumpstart your car, you need a working car. Align the working car to allow the jumper cables to reach from one battery to another. Gently open the hoods of both cars.

Many people get nervous about jumpstarting their car. How and where do you connect the cables, without this happening? Let's use this illustration to understand the principle.

The important thing is to do these 3 steps in order. Let's try to memorize it. This is the only thing you need to learn from this video.

Turn off both cars. Put on the parking brakes.

1. Start with the dead battery first. Connect the positive terminals of both batteries via the red cable.
2. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal on the working battery.
3. Most importantly, do not connect the last black clamp to the dead battery. Instead, connect the last clamp to a nut & bolt on the strut tower of the dead car.

Start the engine of the working car.
Then start up the dead car.
Remove the cables in the reverse order.
Remember, never let the clamps touch each other.

Now close your hood. Drive the revived car for at least 30 minutes to continue charging the battery.

Now off you go!

Battery flat? Here are the steps you need to start your car, either by pushing it or rolling it down a hill.
1) Find a safe, flat area to push start you car.
2) Turn off the fan/radio/lights - this will reduce the load on the engine.
3) Turn the key to the first click - this will disable the steering lock and the immobiliser. If you don't do this, there will be no power.
5) Put the car into gear - 1st gear for most standard cars, 2nd gear if you have a larger engine (over 2500cc).
4) Push! Leave your foot on the clutch so you can build up speed.
5) Once you reach a good speed (at least 10mph), warn your assistant to stop pushing and pop your foot off the clutch quickly. The car will use the momentum to start the engine.
6) Once it fires to life, give it some power and some clutch, so you don't stall.
7) Finally, to charge the battery, take the car for a 10-15 minute drive. Otherwise, you can leave the car startionary with the engine running around 2000rpm, and it'll charge. It won't charge the battery significantly if you're just idling.

- Variations -
Hill start: If you have a nice gradual incline, you can roll the car down the hill instead of using an assistant.
Reverse push start: only for the brave.
Jump start - if you have jump leads and a second car, you can use their battery to give yours a jump. Instructions here: https://www.theaa.com/breakdow....n-cover/advice/using

Warnings
1) You won't have power steering or proper brakes. Normally, the engine helps assist the brakes by pumping hydraulic fluid. You won't have this! So if you are pushed too fast, or down a big hill, and you can't start the car, it'll be hard work to use the brakes. Imagine the brakes on a car from the 1960s. That''ll be it. So don't push the car over 10mph.
2) Watch out for traffic, since you will have no lights.

This is how I do it - do it yourself at your own risk.

Don’t have jumper cables? Try using a good battery from a different car, placing positive to positive and negative to negative on the batteries and then starting the car! This car’s battery was dead and the car wouldn’t start. We were short jumper cables and thank goodness for our Bahamian friend Alex, we learned a handy trick!

This video shows you how to jump start a car battery with a Dewalt power bank jumpstarter. The Dewalt jump starter automatically detects your battery and turns itself on when you connect the jumper cables to the car battery.

Here are the steps to jump start a car with a Dewalt jump starter.

1. Make sure all of the other functions on the Dewalt jump starter are turned off, except for the light, which can be on or off during the jumpstart.

2. Connect the red positive jumpstart cable to the positive terminal on the battery.

3. Connect the black negative clamp to a metal ground on the car.

4. The jump starter screen should turn on. If it does not turn on, push the Light button and it will turn on.

5. Start the car.

6. Unplug the negative jumper cable.

7. Unplug the positive jumper cable.

8. Clamp the jumper cables to the holder on the Dewalt jumpstart battery, and it will turn itself off.

Here’s where you can buy one of these Dewalt jump starters.

Is your car battery flat and are you unsure how to jump-start it? Grab your jump leads, and watch our guide on how to jump-start a car.

Halfords. We Fit. We Service. We Repair.

Halfords up to 35 Litre Jump Leads:
https://www.halfords.com/works....hop-tools/garage-equ

Halfords Motoring Services:
https://www.halfords.com/advic....e/motoring/service/m

Car Batteries:
https://www.halfords.com/motor....ing/bulbs-blades-bat

Before jump-starting your car, make sure you have:
1) Two jump leads. A black, ‘negative’ lead, and a red, ‘positive’ lead
2) Another car with a charged battery
3) Gloves and goggles for extra safety

For safety reasons, double check:
1) The battery isn’t damaged or leaking. If it is, don’t try a jump-start – get a professional’s help
2) There’re no metal items or clothing near the battery
3) There’re no naked flames, including cigarettes, nearby
4) The key is out of the ignition

Park the car with the charged battery opposite the car that has a flat battery so the bonnets are facing one another. Pop the hand brake on.

Next open both bonnets and check the jump-leads reach between the cars.Find the ‘positive’ terminal on the working car. It should look like this.

Connect the red ‘positive’ jump-lead to the ‘positive’ terminal on the working car, checking that the teeth grip the terminal properly.
Then connect the other end of the red jump-lead to the ‘positive’ terminal on the car with the flat battery.

Next, attach the black jump-lead to the working car’s ‘negative’ terminal.

Head to the car with the flat battery but don’t attach the other end of the lead to the ‘negative’ terminal. You’ll need to find a piece of solid metal, like this, far away from the fuel system and battery to attach the black lead to. In some cars this is a specific ‘earthing rod’ – check your handbook to find out if your car has one.

Now all four jump-leads are connected, wait five minutes.

Now start the charged car’s engine and let it run for one minute.

Leave the engine running and try to start your car. If it doesn’t start within 5 seconds, give it 2 more minutes and try again.

Once your car has started, leave both cars running for ten minutes. After this,

remove the leads in reverse order, making sure they don’t touch one another or any metal in the process:
1) Black lead attached to dead car off
2) Black lead attached to working car off
3) Red lead attached to working car off

Finally, leave the previously uncharged car running for twenty minutes or, take it for a 30-minute spin before parking it for the day.
Don’t fancy getting your hands dirty?

Don’t forget Halfords has a professional battery fitting service
