U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he wanted to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin soon to secure an end to Russia's almost three-year-old war with Ukraine, lamenting the huge loss of life.

Russian President Vladimir Putin responded on Friday, saying he was open to discussions with Trump on issues such as the Ukraine war and energy prices, and added it would be a good idea for the two of them to meet.

Trump also mentioned a potential role for China in facilitating peace, stating he sees a very good relationship between the United States and China, and that he hopes China can help end Russia's war in Ukraine.

To which Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded saying that China is willing to maintain communication "with all parties" regarding the Ukraine crisis. Dialogue and negotiations are the “only feasible ways” to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, she said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (January 24) he was open to discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump on issues such as the Ukraine war and energy prices, and said it would be a good idea for the two of them to meet.

But Putin told a Russian TV reporter that the question of negotiating with Ukraine was complicated by the fact that its president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, had signed a decree preventing him from conducting talks with Putin.

Putin described Trump, who this week threatened to hit Russia with new sanctions and tariffs if it did not negotiate an end to the war, as smart and pragmatic. He said he did not expect the U.S. president to make decisions on sanctions that would rebound on the U.S. economy.

"Therefore, most likely, it would be better for us to meet, based on the realities of today, to talk calmly on all those areas that are of interest to both the United States and Russia. We are ready. But, I repeat, this primarily, of course, depends on the decisions and choices of the current American administration," he said.

President Donald Trump visited California Friday and toured the area impacted by the Palisades Fire. He vowed to help and fix LA as soon as possible. President Trump also waived federal permits and declared a national emergency.

After surveying wildfire damage, President Trump met with Mayor Bass, LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley, County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, and several other local and state political leaders during a roundtable meeting after touring the Pacific Palisades.

During the meeting, Trump declared a national emergency and announced that he'd be signing an executive order to open the pumps and valves in California.

"We want to get that water pouring down here as quickly as possible. Let hundreds of millions of gallons of water flow down into Southern California. And that'll be a big benefit to you," he said.

Trump also disagreed with Mayor Karen Bass about wildfire response during the roundtable discussion. He also confronted other Democratic lawmakers about fire recovery efforts.

The president said everyone needs to work together to help rebuild parts of Los Angeles and said the federal government is supporting the city and state 100%.

Trump has been vocal about his disapproval of the way Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass handled the fire response. Earlier this week, he threatened to withhold federal disaster funds for Los Angeles, and prior to arriving in LA, the president said he wanted the city to first release its water and implement voter ID.
