The Internet has been referred to as a series of tubes. But long before email, people transmitted messages rapidly across cities through networks of pneumatic tubes. These are pipelines that use air pressure to propel canisters from point A to point B. You can still see them at the drive-through windows of some banks and pharmacies.

But when I say “long before email,” I don’t mean the ‘way groovy Sixties, man,’ or even the ‘rip-roarin Twenties.’ I’m talking about the mid-1800s... which I don’t have a specific accent for.

The idea of using pressurized gas to produce mechanical motion goes all the way back to a Ptolemaic Greek mathematician called Hero of Alexandria. But the first practical application of the concept sped mail and telegrams through London starting in the 1850s.

By 1886, London had 34 miles of mail tubes underneath the city transmitting 32,000 messages a day at up to 51 miles per hour.

Cities like New York, Boston, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna had similar systems by the turn of the century, though the world wars and the growing automobile industry shut most of them down by the 1950s.

The technology is still in use today to transport materials through manufacturing plants, medical samples through hospitals, and your bank deposit slips to you.

“But how??” you demand of your computer screen. It’s inanimate and I’m prerecorded, but I’ve got the answer for you anyway.

These pneumatic systems start with an airtight tube with sealable hatches at either end. You put your Thing What Needs Transporting in a canister that’s smaller than the tube, but has flexible skirts on either end that can form to the interior edges of the tube.

You put your canister in a hatch and press the “go” button.

The button activates a motor at the other end of the tube, which opens a vent and turns a fan. The fan drives particles of air from the tube out through the vent and into the wild blue yonder. Thus creating a difference in the density of the air in front of the canister and behind it.

The denser air behind the canister pushes it to its destination. A trap door closes behind the canister, the motor stops (breaking the partial vacuum created in the tube by the fan), and your buddy can open the hatch and take the canister.

It’s basically the same thing that happens when you drink through a straw. Your suction creates an area of low pressure at the top of the straw. The higher-pressure liquid at the bottom pushes a sip up into your face.

Of course, that’s the simple version. Complex pneumatic systems may have dozens of branching tubes containing switches, and transfer points that house extra fans.

By using computer systems to carefully regulate the fans and thus the air pressure, even delicate lab samples can arrive safely.

More than a century and a half before Elon Musk thought up the Hyperloop, his mash-up of pneumatic and maglev ideas (and a bunch of other moving parts), people were using pneumatic tubes to move people. Though we're familiar with pneumatic tubes from banks, they've been around much longer and used for a lot more.

Pneumatic tubes, also known as pneumatic dispatch systems or simply "pneumatic tubes," are a network of tubes used for transporting physical objects, documents, or small packages through pressurized air or a partial vacuum. In the case of New York City (NYC), pneumatic tubes were historically used for various purposes, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In NYC, pneumatic tube systems were primarily employed for the rapid delivery of mail, messages, and small packages within office buildings, businesses, or even between different parts of the city. These systems consisted of a network of interconnected tubes that spanned across the buildings, often connecting various departments or floors.

The operation of pneumatic tube systems involved placing the item to be transported into a cylindrical container or carrier. This carrier was then inserted into the tube, and the pressure difference or vacuum created within the system propelled it through the network to its destination. At the receiving end, the carrier would be removed from the tube, and the contents would be retrieved.

Pneumatic tube systems were widely used in the early 20th century and provided a faster alternative to manual delivery methods. They were especially prevalent in large cities like NYC, where the need for efficient communication and transportation systems was high. However, as technological advancements occurred and alternative methods such as telephones, fax machines, and email became prevalent, the use of pneumatic tube systems diminished.

Today, pneumatic tube systems are not as common in NYC or in most other cities, with the exception of specific industries like healthcare or logistics. However, you may still find remnants of these systems in older buildings or museums, serving as a reminder of their once widespread use.

12 ASPIRING SONGWRITERS JOIN THIS YEAR'S 2ND TUNOG TOLEDO MUSIC FESTIVAL

What better way to capped off Toledo's celebration of heritage and culture but through music.

The songwriting and interpretation competition showcased 12 aspiring composers: 6 for Tunog Toledo category and another 6 for Pop Music Category.

The song "BULAWAN" of composer Aljon Deiparine and singer Juneil Librea topped this year's pop music category bagging the grand prize as well as the Best Interpreter Award.

The song is a reminder for all to love their roots, to value their culture, and to always be proud for being a Toledonhon.

Second prize winner under pop music category is "ICE RANA" by Philbert Undalok (composer and singer) which talks about camaraderie while third prize is "DI NALANG IKAW" by Johnson Petallo (composer) and John Michael Canillas (singer) which is a song for all the broken-hearted.

Meanwhile, "TAGA TOLEDO KO" by Jayson Pando (composer and singer) bagged the grand prize for Tunog Toledo category; second prize winner is "TOLEDOHANON" by Maryllone Anajao (composer & singer); and "TATAK TOLEDO" by Baby Jean Sevilla (composer) and Leah Librea (singer) for the third prize. These three winning songs are about hope, beauty, and pride of Toledo.

"AKONG PRINSESA" by April Jay Navarro was awarded the People's Choice Award that has 23k shares, 4.4k views, and 1.2k reacts as of this writing.

The competition which is a partnership of Toledo LGU and KBGSN Media Production aims to enggage aspiring composers and singers to use music as a vessel for advocacy of showing Toledo's rich pool of people, heritage and culture.

The event was held at Toledo Sports Center last Saturday, June 12, 2021 as part of the series of activities of Toledo fiesta celebration.
