A Guide On How To Stop Your Dog From Destroying Things

If you have a problem with your dog destroying items and chewing up your possessions, you are not alone.

This is a very common behavior and also one of the easiest behaviors to change.

Before we get into how to stop your dogs destructive chewing, we need to understand why dogs choose this behavior in the first place.

Why does my dog destroy everything?

The answer is actually very simple. How to Stop Your Dog Destroying Things

Your dog is bored.

When dogs get bored, they look for a way to entertain themselves.

It is the humans job to teach the dog how we would like them to entertain themselves because if we don’t, the dog will take matters into his own hands which often leads to destructive behavior.

Training your dog to stop destroying things also comes down to a level of management and not setting our dog up to fail.

One huge aspect of management is keeping your house clean and keeping things picked up so your dog doesn’t have the opportunity to destroy them.

If you leave your shoes out in the middle of a room, you are asking for your dog to chew on them.

If you are dealing with a dog that destroys things, before you do anything, make sure you clean up and remove anything that your dog could be tempted to chew on.

The ways to stop destructive chewing

The first thing we can do to stoping destructive behavior in dogs is to actually tell them what we would like them to chew on.

How do we do this?

With puzzle toys and bones!

Puzzle toys are any kind of toys that you can put food or treats into and the dog has to work to get them out.

You could even turn an empty water bottle into a puzzle toy if you are on a budget.

When you give your dog a puzzle toy with food inside of it, that is going to have the highest value of anything else in the house.

There is no way your dog would choose to go destroy the couch when there is a toy stuffed with treats available.

By giving our dogs puzzle toys with food inside, we are very clearly communicating to our dogs “this is what I would like for you to do.”

Bones are another good thing to give your dog to chew on, but there is a safety warning you must keep in mind at all times

COOKED BONES ARE DANGEROUS TO DOGS AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS!

This means that if you want to give your dog a bone to chew on, it MUST be raw.how to stop my dogs destructive chewing

Cooked bones can splinter and can be a choking hazard as well as cause digestive issues, so avoid cooked bones at all cost.

Another idea that works well when your dog is constantly chewing in one place is to use a bitter spray on that one spot.

Lets say there is one corner of the couch your dog keeps on going back to for what ever reason.

You simply take some of the bitter spray and apply it to the couch, and the next time your dog goes to chew on it he will get a very bad taste in his mouth and will learn very quickly that chewing on the couch is not fun.

The last method you can use is timeout.

Timeout means when you catch your dog chewing on something he isn’t suppose to, you very quickly put him into timeout.

This has to be a place that there are no people, food, toys, or anything fun.

It should be a room of complete isolation.

You put him in timeout for 10 seconds, then let him out.

Do not leave him in there any longer because he will not understand why he is in there.

And when he comes out of timeout, you don’t say anything.

No bad dog, no scolding him, just ignore him and go on with what ever you were doing.

If he starts to chew on the area again, you quickly put him right back in and repeat as necessary.

Stopping a dog from destroying thing really comes down to two things.

#1: Managing your situation by keeping things picked up and not giving your dog options of things to chew on that he shouldn’t be.

#2: Communicating to your dog what you would like them to chew on by taking advantage of puzzle toys and bones.

If you live with a dog, you probably have noticed that your pup barks at some people, but is completely cool with others.
Why do dogs have different reactions to different people? Do they know something about them that you don’t? In this video, we will tell you why your dog barks at some strangers, but not others.

And wait until you hear what we have to tell you about why dogs bark at certain dogs. That’s a lot more surprising than you may think.

People Smell
Dogs see the world primary through scent and a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 to 100,000 times better than that of humans. Because of this disparity, it’s hard to imagine all the information that our canines can gain from a person’s scent. People have different scents and your dog may bark at them because their smell could be off-putting to your dog.
For example, your dog may bark at some people because they have the scent of another dog or cat on their clothing. It’s especially true when someone has a dog of their own. Or they may have the scent of something unfamiliar, like cigarettes.
Beyond that, some dogs have an aversion to strong smells---like vinegar, perfume, alcohol, citrus, or bleach.
You may think the scents will fade away after a few hours, but your dog will be able to smell them for a long time afterwards. Likewise, pheromones that the person is giving off could be alerting the dog of a threat as well.

It gets even more interesting. Dogs can sense when we are nervous because our bodies produce certain stress-related chemicals and hormones that have distinctive odors. When someone who makes you nervous approaches you, your dog may realize that you are not at ease, and they bark at them to ensure you stay safe.

A Person’s Looks
Dogs don't see details or color as well as we do, but they do still depend on vision to some degree. This is why looks can set off different triggers in dogs.

There can be something different with the person that unsettles your pup. The person may wear a hat, have a beard, talk loudly, wear baggy clothes, squeaky shoes or rattling jewelry.
Some dogs feel afraid and insecure if a person’s features or movement style is unfamiliar to them, or remind them of a threat. Like a stranger who is standing in a way that appears imposing and aggressive to the dog, or a person who makes sudden movements.

To avoid these situations, make sure your dog gets exposed to lots of different people.

Now, let’s talk about why dogs bark at some dogs, but not the others.
While humans communicate using words, dogs mainly communicate through their body language and scent.

Your dog may bark at some dogs because they show threatening body language. You may not notice their body language, but subtle signs like freezing of the body, whale eyes, tense mouth, or wrinkled nose may be off-putting to your dog.
And this is why some small dogs are aggressive toward big dogs. If your small dog barks at larger dogs, or is aggressive towards them, it could be because they feel threatened and are fearful of their imposing appearance.

Dogs communicate with each other in ways that we don’t understand, that we are just completely blind about. A dog will see something in another dog’s body language or pick up scent clues that signal something the first dog either likes or dislikes. Dogs can sense those subtle body cues or scents from a significant distance away.

Another reason that a dog may take an immediate dislike to another is that dog’s historical experience. If, for example, your pooch was attacked by a big white dog in the past, he may exhibit intense fear and aggression toward large white dogs

Likewise, dogs may also bark at each other out of excitement. If another dog shows signs of excitement in their body language, like a wagging tail or bowing their front leg, your dog may bark at them to indicate their desire to play with them. But rest assured that you’ll know when your dog barks out of aggression versus excitement, as aggressive barking is often accompanied by growling or a tense body language.

And it’s important to remember that although dogs are pack animals, it doesn’t mean they want to socialize with any dog. Think about it! Do you want to talk with any person you meet on the street?
Just like humans, dogs simply don’t like bonding with certain dogs.
If your furry friend is aggressive towards some dogs, don’t keep forcing them together expecting them to “warm up” to each other.

And finally, many dogs bark at each other because they are being protective. This is especially true when other dogs are on their territory. Your dog is guarding you as a member of their pack.

If you live with a dog, you probably know that they exhibit some behaviors that are a little strange.
Why do dogs bark at some strangers and not others? Why do they dig their bed or floor? And why do they bark at some dogs and not others?
Stay tuned to find out…

Why do dogs get so excited to see their owners?
When canine behavioral researchers studied brain scans of dogs exposed to certain smells, they found that the scent of a familiar person triggered the reward centers of a dog’s brain in a way that no other scent accomplished.
This suggests that not only dogs can discern their familiar humans, but that dogs genuinely love spending time with their owners. Scientists believe that dogs experience something akin to pleasure when they smell their owners.
Keep in mind that dogs are very social animals that don't like to be left alone. This is why dogs are overexcited when you come home. After all - they’ve been waiting for you all day.

Why dogs dig their bed or floor
Dogs may dig their bed for several reasons. A dog’s wild ancestors scratched at piles of leaves, dirt and pine needles to create a comfortable mound of bedding to rest.
Many domesticated dogs still retain this behavior; By scratching or digging at the floor or their bed, they are trying to create a snug nest to sleep in.
Bed-scratching is also a territorial behavior. Dogs have glands in their paws that leave a distinctive scent on bedding. Your dog scratches to claim a space as his. Interestingly enough, bed-scratching is also part of canine maternal instinct. If your female dog is getting ready to have her puppies, her bed-scratching behavior will suddenly increase. She’s making a nest for the arrival of her new pups.
Why dogs bark at some strangers and not others
There are several reasons as to why your dog barks at some people and not others.
More often than not, dogs react to certain people negatively because they are experiencing something new.
Every exposure to strangers can seem threatening for a dog.
Dogs are more likely to bark at the people who have more unfamiliar traits and features, like baggy clothes, particular body language, or wear accessories like hat, which can make the dog feel nervous.
Negative association is another reason that dogs bark at certain people.
Some people can appear frightening to certain dogs because they connect a person’s looks or smell with bad memories like abuse in the past.
Interestingly enough, dogs may also bark at people because they see people’s true nature. Studies have shown that dogs can detect if a person is untrustworthy.
To prevent your dog from barking at strangers, make sure to properly socialize them.
Another way to prevent your dog from barking at people is to redirect their attention using a command like “Watch me” when someone new is around.
What are dogs saying when they bark?
Recent research has found that dogs have fairly plastic vocal cords that allow them slightly alter the sound of their barks to convey different messages.
For example, researchers recorded a dog growling at a stranger and growling over food. When they played back the “food growl” while offering another dog some juicy bone, dogs were much more hesitant to accept the treat than when they heard the stranger growl.
Why dogs bark at some dogs and not others
There are several reasons as to why your dog barks at some dogs and not others.
More often than not, your dog reacts to certain dogs negatively because it considers the other dogs as being threatening. It often happens when the other dogs are showing threatening body language. You may not notice their body language, but scent clues and subtle body signs such as freezing of the body, a hard stare, tense mouth, or wrinkled nose may be off-putting to your dog.
Another reason that a dog may take an immediate dislike to another is that dog’s historical experience. If, for example, your pooch was attacked by a white male dog in the past, they may exhibit intense fear and aggression toward white male dogs.
Keep in mind that dogs are territorial creatures. They often bark at other dogs to tell them that this is their territory. It’s their way of saying, “I live here and I’m protecting my home and family.”
Dogs mark their territory by urinating on vertical objects. Your dog may have been having a peeing war with other dogs in the neighborhood, and when your dog smells that other dog that covered his lamppost pee last week, he may have a few harsh words for him.

Dogs are always barking, which means dogs are always taking. Here's how to tell if there's a burglar outside, it's bathroom time, or if they're just playful. Following is a transcript of the video:

Oh, there's so many types of Barks!

There’s so many types of vocalization that dogs make and I think the first thing to realize is that they do usually all have a meaning.

So, a bark is not just a noisy sound. It is a noisy sound but it's usually a sound that's trying to do one of a couple of things.

Express distress, get your attention, tell us about somebody outside the door, some disruption or something surprising.

Look at the context in which the dog is using the vocalization and the context is going to tell you a lot about

what the sound means and incidentally, if you don't want your dog to bark as an attention-getter, to tell you that it's time to take them out, for instance, which is a really good attention-getter they might find then stop responding to that as an attention-getter.

See what earlier signs they might be giving you that they're ready to go out or take them out before they start giving you any signs that they're ready to go out so you can kind of preempt that behavior if you don't want to have it instead of trying to punish it.

Punishing communication never makes sense.

There is a play-pant that has been recorded by researchers. In play, they make a kind of huffing sound which is like a laugh. They don't do that as much, other times, they use their body to express their happiness and the smile that some dogs have is just a feature of their face.

If it makes them look happier to you, great! But they don't have the types of musculature that we do to make a smile.

That doesn't mean they can’t feel happy or that doesn't look like a smile. I mean, their happiness is expressed through like a wildly wagging tail or the bodies sort of wiggling, and the ears back in excitement to see you for instance. That's pure joy, instead of just greeting us with a simple smile.
